Student Senate candidates announced

Campaigning is set to begin Tuesday while the first debate will be held Wednesday.

Student Senate’s Board of Elections announced the candidates for the 2015-16 academic year Monday afternoon.

Applications were due March 26, but Ohio University officials and BOE co-chairs Omar Kurdi and Neti Gupta had to verify that applicants met several qualifications before making the announcement.

Executive candidates had to collect 75 signatures; all other candidates had to collect 25 signatures to be eligible to run. In addition, each ticket had to complete a “party declaration,” which included the name of the party, the party’s purpose and names for all of the positions that will appear on the ballot.

Student Affairs also reviewed applications for accuracy, grades and other factors, Ryan Lombardi, vice president for Student Affairs, said in an email.

Campaigning will begin Tuesday at 7 a.m. and the first debate will be held April 1 at 5:30 p.m. in Porter 105.

Voting will be open to students April 14 to 16.

The following students will be running for executive positions:

Running on the Student Nation ticket as its presidential candidate is Ben Mathes, senate’s commissioner for governmental affairs and former Post reporter. The vice presidential candidate is Ellenore Holbrook, senator for the Student Appropriations Commission. The treasurer candidate for the ticket is Charlotte Klimovich, who is the vice commissioner of SAC on senate.

Running on the BARE ticket, as its presidential candidate is Ryant Taylor, a former Post columnist whose final column appears in today’s issue, senate’s LGBTQA affairs commissioner, organizing coordinator for the OU Student Union and a member of New BLAC. The ticket’s vice presidential candidate is Olivia Wallace, a previous Post photographer, senate’s environmental commissioner and president of OU’s Sierra Student Coalition.

Running for president on the Phoenix ticket is Anthony “Tony” Piccioni, president of the International Business Society at OU and peer mentor for a freshman learning community. The vice presidential candidate is Emily Ginty, president of the co-ed service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega. Mackenna Myers, treasurer of Alpha Phi Omega, is running on the ticket as treasurer.

Running on the SOS (Serving Our Students) ticket as its presidential candidate is Gabrielle Bacha, a South Green senator on senate. The ticket’s vice presidential candidate is Jared Ohnsman, and resident assistant in Perkins Hall and the historian for Phi Sigma Pi. The treasurer candidate for the ticket is Hannah Clouser, a SAC senator on senate.

The Post crosschecked the names of executive candidates against Athens Municipal Court records for any citations or arrests.

One candidate, Holbrook, was cited in April 2014 for disorderly conduct, a minor misdemeanor. She said the incident occurred after a friend was caught possessing marijuana.

“I took responsibility for it as well,” she said. “(It’s) never a nice experience to go to court, but it was eye-opening.”

No other candidates have cases filed with the Athens Municipal Court at this time.
