Fenzel House on South Green November 4, 2015

Housing: About 200 Ohio University students are scheduled to stay on campus during spring break

Students who live in Luchs, Tankaka, Sowle, Carr, Sargent and Wilson will be allowed to stay in their own rooms.

Though some Ohio University students go home or travel the world during spring break, others Bobcats opt to stay on campus in a residence hall.

About 200 students will be staying in residence halls during break, Executive Director of Housing and Residence Life Pete Trentacoste said. They will be staying in halls including Fenzel House, Sargent, Wilson, Luchs, Tanaka, Sowle and Carr halls.

“Housing and Residence Life will not be charging an additional fee to any of our approved students who stay on campus during the 2016 spring break,” Trentacoste said in an email.

According to a previous Post report, Fenzel House is vacant this academic year.

Students who live in Luchs, Tankaka, Sowle, Carr, Sargent and Wilson will be allowed to stay in their own rooms, Trentacoste said.

"Housing anticipates Fenzel being completely full," Trentacoste said in an email, adding that the building has 114 beds.

Earlier in February, an email was sent out to students informing them about spring break housing. According to the email, students had to make reservations and be approved in order to secure housing.

Ryan Tamasovich, a freshman studying computer science, said providing housing for students to stay on campus during spring break is a good idea.

“It’s kind of hard for some people to go home over break,” Tamasovich said.

Tamasovich said it's easy for him to get home because he lives about an hour away from campus, but some students don't have that luxury.

“For others, they’re not going to fly to New Mexico,” Tamasovich said.

Andrew Orsburn, a sophomore studying computer science, said he doesn't know anyone who is staying on campus during break, but thinks housing should still be available for those who are.

“Especially for international students and stuff like that, definitely it’s a need,” Orsburn said.

All OU residence halls will close Feb. 26 at 6 p.m, according to an email. Students who remain in the building after closing time will be fined $25 for failure to leave. Also, a fine of $25 per hour will be added on for every hour they remain in the building after 6 p.m.
