T-Pain performs during a concert organized by the Black Student Cultural Programming Board at MemAud on Feb. 16.

T-Pain shows off his vocals, parties at Broney’s

At one point, T-Pain removed his sweatshirt and danced while his band played a rendition of the “Pink Panther Theme” and revealed an Ohio University T-shirt, which was met by a roar of approval from the crowd.

During his performance at the Sibs Weekend concert, rapper T-Pain asked the crowd “What’s going on after the show though?” A few hours later, that question was answered when he made an appearance at Broney’s Alumni Grill.

“It wasn’t like a big rush of a crowd,” Broney’s bartender Nick Alesantrino said. “But you could tell something was up because a bunch of people came through our back door, which no one ever walks through, so it kind of created a scene.”

Alesantrino, a junior studying mathematics, said T-Pain made an appearance at Broney’s around 11 p.m., left around 1:30 a.m., and didn’t cause any disruption.

“Everything went pretty well,” he said. “There was nothing that was outstanding.”

T-Pain performed at the annual Sibs Weekend Concert to a sold-out crowd hosted by the Black Student Cultural Programming Board.

The Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium stage was lined with a drummer, a bassist, a guitarist, a keyboardist, a synth player and two backup singers Saturday, joined by T-Pain, who came out on stage to the sounds of “Booty Wurk (One Cheek at a Time).”

Abstaining from using the autotuned sound he became so synonymous with, T-Pain showcased the fact that he can actually perform without it blending his club hits such as “Cyclone,” and “Bartender” with his dynamic, R&B singing.

“I am a big fan of having the band up there,” Ben Roth, a student from Miamisburg Ohio, said. “It’s the actual music, not just the recording, so it really adds to the feel of the actual concert itself.”

At one point, T-Pain removed his sweatshirt and danced while his band played a rendition of the “Pink Panther Theme,” and revealed an Ohio University T-shirt, which was met by a roar of approval from the crowd. The members of his band, known as The Electric Company, were wearing OU apparel as well.

“They say this is the turn-up school,” T-Pain yelled, followed by an “OU - Oh Yeah” chant with the audience members.

Lois Robinson, a senior studying long-term health care administration, said although the show was quick, she enjoyed it.

“It was pretty good,” Robinson said. “It was different, a different type of concert. I’ve never been to one of those — a live band.”

Kameron Earlyn, a student at the University of Findlay, said hearing some of the familiar T-Pain songs made him feel nostalgic.

“He hasn’t come out with a lot of new stuff,” Earlyn said. “So it’s like stuff from back in the day. I like ‘Bartender’ a lot.”

At multiple points throughout the show, the crowd began chanting “Bartender,” to which T-Pain joking replied each time, “Shut the f--k up.”

“It’s coming,” he said. “That’s the good one. I don’t wanna shoot my load all over your belly button before you’re done.”

A brief cover of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was injected into the middle of the show, which was quickly transitioned into another song.

Before the headliner, DJ Bandcamp, the official DJ for the Indiana Pacers, opened up the show to get the crowd excited. He played songs such as Drake and Future’s “Jumpman,” and A$AP Ferg’s “Work (Remix).” At one point, DJ Bandcamp asked to have the venue lights all turned off, and encouraged the crowd to shine their flashlights if they recognized the “throwback” songs he played such as Snoop Dogg’s “Drop it Like it’s Hot,” and DMX’s “Party (Up in Here).”

Brandon “B Flame” Brown, an OU student, performed three songs after DJ Bandcamp. Later, he asked the crowd to join him in singing “Happy Birthday” for his friend, Chris, who died last summer.

Responding to the audience’s cheers for more, a sweaty and out of breath T-Pain exclaimed “That was my workout for the week.”
