The Athena Cinema hopes to draw more students to theater with new cult classic series

“The Dude” will reappear on the big screen at The Athena Cinema for its new film series.

The Athena, 20 S. Court St., will be starting a Déjà View: Fall Cult Classics Series on Thursday at 7 p.m. where a film will be shown every Thursday for eight weeks. Admission is $6.50 for non-members and $4 for members.

A cult film is known for its following — the film has a fan base that watches it religiously. The sub genre of film usually strays from typical cinematic conventions, such as an abnormal storyline that can be interpreted in different ways.

Alexandra Kamody, the director of the Athena, said choosing what films to show was a long process and that she looked through hundreds movies.

“A lot of them we chose because they are well known and we wanted to bring in new audiences to try to get them to check out the theater,” Kamody said.

Kamody anticipates students will come to see titles like Pulp Fiction and The Big Lebowski.

“We think people will be pretty excited about these movies,” Kamody said.

Kamody wanted the series to include general cult classics, but found it difficult to prevent a certain theme from arising, she said. She added that the selection process was a balancing act and had to choose a variety of cult classics.

“If we get good response to (the series), we might then do more specific themes, like horror cult classics or women in cult classics,” Kamody said.

The series will start with a John Waters movie, Pink Flamingos. The film follows Babs Johnson, played by drag queen Divine, who has been deemed the filthiest person alive. When someone threatens to take her title, Johnson has to stop them, according to Rotten Tomatoes.

Katherine Bliss, an undecided freshman, said the “lineup looks great” and that she is “definitely is going to be there,” but the order does not seem to grab people’s attention.

“I would have started with a more popular movie to catch people’s eye,” she said.

The title that stood out to her the most was Edward Scissorhands starring Johnny Depp, she said. She added that she likes movies with misunderstood characters, and Scissorhands is the epitome of misunderstood.

Even though he has not seen any of the films, Andy Zimmerman, a sophomore studying marketing, said he is interested in seeing Wayne’s World because people reference the film a lot.

“I’ve never actually seen any of them, but I do know they’re classics,” he said, “I’m sure they’ll have a lot of nostalgic value for people.”
