Good Morning,
All eyes are on the Cleveland Indians as they continue to make a deep run into the MLB playoffs, which means eyes are also on the team’s controversial mascot: Chief Wahoo.
The Native American man who designed the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian attempted to prohibit the Indians from using their nickname and Chief Wahoo logo in last night’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays. And while his case was dismissed, the publicity reignited a decades-old controversy surrounding the team’s nickname and mascot.
The Indians released a comment on the situation, saying they “are focused on competing in the postseason” and “will not comment any further on matters that distract from our pursuit on the field.”
Miami University came under similar scrutiny in the '90s, when the Native American tribe for which the university was named urged the university to change its nickname from “Redskins.” Miami obliged in 1996.
