Good morning,
With Halloween weekend mere days away and capitalistic pressure to spend several hundred dollars on a one-night-only costume at its peak, students around campus are hoping to prevent widespread cultural appropriation and promote a message of tolerance of other races and nationalities.
Students Teaching About Racism in Society (S.T.A.R.S), now led by president Mailé Nguyen and vice president Craig Jenkins, is continuing a poster campaign started in 2011 to increase awareness of the potential harm of wearing costumes that misrepresent foreign cultures and perpetuate racial stereotypes. The “We’re a Culture Not a Costume” campaign has attracted attention across the United States, as well as in Canada and New Zealand.
“Do some of the research behind the stereotypes behind the history of those costumes,” Jenkins told The Post, when asked what he suggests people should do to avoid cultural appropriation this holiday season. “Try to put yourself in someone else’s shoes.” But not literally, of course.
