Police Blotter: Man found “passed out” on the ground, five arrested for trespassing at The Ridges

The Ohio University Police Department saw a considerably quieter week following a raucous Homecoming Weekend, though a number of individuals decided their game day spirit wasn’t going without a fight.

At approximately 2:45 a.m. on Sunday, officers responded to reports of a male “passed out” in the grass at the corner of College and Mill streets. After “several attempts,” officers were able to wake the man, who was unsure of his location at the time, according to the police report.

While speaking with the individual, officers also noted that he smelled like alcohol. The officers observed that he had bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and was unsteady on his feet.

The officers arrested the man for disorderly conduct by intoxication and transported him to Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail.

Sunday morning’s incident was one of three alcohol-related arrests made by OUPD over the course of the week, which also saw 10 reports of theft, eight drug charges, two arrests for criminal mischief and five individuals charged for criminal trespassing.

Ill met by moonlight

As the full “Hunter’s Moon” cast its light over Athens around midnight Sunday, two OUPD officers patrolling The Ridges observed five individuals entering a restricted portion of the building “without privilege to do so.”

While officers arrested members of the group for misdemeanor charges of criminal trespassing, one of the individuals attempted to flee the scene but was caught and served additional charges for underage alcohol consumption and obstructing official business, according to the police report.

You had a bad day

Across town Monday, Athens County Sheriff’s Deputies saw a man at the Valero in The Plains walking around the parking lot of the gas station “looking confused and disorientated."

When deputies approached him, the man said he was simply “having a bad day” and added that he was planning to stay with a friend a few minutes down the road. According to the police report, no further action was taken.

Later that day, the Sheriff’s Office received a report from a man who claimed he was being threatened via phone by another male. According to the police report, the complainant said a man had been calling and telling him that he was “going to come to his house and fight him.” No further action was taken in the case — the individual said he simply wanted to file a report.

Sunday morning stumble

At approximately 2 a.m. on Sunday, an OUPD officer responded to reports of a male “stumbling and falling to the ground” in South Green Garage, according to a police report.

Having determined that the individual in question was in a “highly intoxicated state,” the officer arrested the man for underage consumption by intoxication. Police later discovered he had a fictitious ID, but did not charge him for it. He was transported to Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail.
