Sporting Insights: Two unlikely teams may go to the World Series

The Cleveland Indians are two wins away from the World Series, and the Chicago Cubs are three wins away from the World Series as I write this on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.

I never expected to write that sentence in my life.

First off, these two teams rarely win when it matters most. The Chicago Cubs not only haven’t won a World Series since 1908, but they haven’t even been to one since 1945. That is 71 long, long years. That is mind boggling.

The Cleveland Indians were in the World Series as recently as 1997 but lost in heart-breaking fashion to the Florida Marlins. The Indians most recent postseason play was in 2007 when they blew a 3-to-1 series lead to the Boston Red Sox. I’m sure Cleveland fans enjoyed some sweet revenge during the division series when they swept the Red Sox.

Anyways, imagine an Indians vs. Cubs World Series. How crazy would that be? Two teams at the root of so many jokes playing each other on baseball’s biggest stage. I would not be shocked if the world ended five minutes before first pitch if this matchup happened.

A Cubs-Indians Series would be refreshing, too. Not seeing the San Francisco Giants, St Louis Cardinals and Red Sox playing in the World Series would be very nice. Those teams have had their moments. It is time for new teams to rise up and have their own time in the spotlight. It will also be nice not having to hear the narrative about the San Francisco Giants being really good in even number years.

I think that Chicago would legitimately burn down if the Cubs win it all. People will be losing their jobs because they will celebrate too hard. As a Cubs fans, I plan on being apart of it 100 percent. If I have to skip some class, I will skip some class. In fact, I have a feeling that many Cubs fans will be “sick” or one of their many relatives will “pass away” in late October or early November this year.

As far as Cleveland goes, I was in shock that the city didn’t burn down when the Cleveland Cavaliers won it all in June. But if the Indians win, I bet Clevelanders will be climbing fire trucks like they were in June while listening to the song "Cleveland Rocks" on repeat. I don’t really understand why they love that song so much, but I respect it.

Never change, Cleveland.

If you are a sports fan, root for a Cubs vs. Indians World Series. It might cause the world to end, but if it doesn’t, it will be a fantastic series.
