Chuck's Collegiate Politics: Shine a light on South Green

You know, we really do have a gorgeous campus.

Honestly, I feel like every inch of this place still has that '20s Ivy League aesthetic that we pride ourselves on being the “Harvard on the Hocking.” Well the '20s were a great time, there is one minor detail of the '20s that we should probably modernize.

Lights.

Yeah, OK, we have those. However, last night as I emerged from my humble abode in Ewing to run over to Wray. I looked over and noticed the blue emergency light pole.

“Hey, you know that’s a good thing,” I thought to myself. But from the 100 feet from Ewing to Wray, I noticed something: that one, lone blue light pole looked to me like it is the only one on all of South Green. And, might I add, if someone needs that emergency service right away, it is hard to get to Ewing, where the blue pole is, in a reasonable amount of time.

Another little detail that makes South less than safe is the actual lack of lighting. Living on South is otherwise phenomenal, and while I was able to live in the bougie estate of Tanaka last year, one thing I have noticed (in what I consider a downgrade) in Back South is the literal lack of light.

Walking back here at night time is entirely unsafe. I tell all my friends to walk on the catwalk because there is less of a chance of someone jumping out at you. Ever walk under the catwalk at night? It feels like you’re walking through the set of a low-budget Saw movie knockoff. Dim-lit, flickering lights that haven’t been changed any time recently have a charm to them, that is until you feel like someone could be in the shadows, ready to pop out at you.

Sure, I know that a majority of South Green will be rebuilt within the next five years, so putting temporary lights in the already decaying buildings isn’t on the University’s agenda. I just hope that the residence halls that will stand on the graves of Back South will have enough lighting so we aren’t living in this low-budget horror film back here.
