Morrison-Gordon Elementary School students carry the American flag down Court Street during the Veterans Day Parade, in Athens on Nov. 11, 2014.

Annual Veterans Day parade to be held Friday

Court Street will come alive Friday with trumpets, floats and the colors of red, white and blue during the annual Veterans Day parade.

The parade will begin at 10 a.m. and start on Morris Avenue.

From there, the parade will turn left onto East State St., right onto Carpenter St., left onto Court St. and then onto Union Street, ending in front of the Civil War monument on College Green.

The parade will include an estimated 40 units, about the same as previous years, Athens deputy service safety director Ron Lucas said.

"It's not just floats, it could be military groups, elected officials, marching bands," Lucas said.

Lucas estimates that the parade will last from 35 minutes to an hour.

Once the parade ends, Mayor Steve Patterson will give a speech, followed by a proclamation for Jose Dimas-Torres, an Athens resident who received a Congressional Gold Medal. A poem will also be read by City of Athens Poet Laureate Allison Stein.

Thom Hirbe, the bar manager at Casa Nueva, 6 W. State St., said although he would be working during the parade, he would step out and check it out if given the opportunity.

"I'd like to see more people come out for it," he said. "I'm hypocritical for saying that ... but it just seems veterans nationwide are undersupported so if the least you can do is come and participate in the parade, you should."

Some business managers felt the events would bring a change to their ordinary Friday business schedule.

"There's gonna be a lot of people in here early for coffee before the parade," Jason Miller, the general manager of Whit's Frozen Custard, 49 S. Court St., said. "But then when the parade starts, this place is gonna be dead ... everyone's gonna be outside. And then afterwards there may be a small rush of people wanting to get custard."

Karie Albers, the front of house manager at Court Street Diner, said that she expects a little more business but nothing "too crazy."

"We have such big windows people might be in here since they can see it in here," she added.

In addition to classes being canceled, city offices will be closed, with the exception of 24-7 services on Friday.

West 82, which is typically open on weekdays, will also be closed.
