Good morning,

Athens residents and Ohio University students go to nearby Wayne National Forest to hike, hunt or just enjoy being outdoors.

Tonight, though, some of those same people will be meeting inside ARTS/West for an “emergency community meeting” concerning the forest.

Parcels of Wayne National Forest, the only national forest in Ohio, are scheduled to be auctioned off for oil and gas purposes on Dec. 13, according to a previous Post article. The decision by the Bureau of Land Management could potentially lead to hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking.

The process of fracking includes injecting pressurized liquid to fracture rock and release gas.

The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. and will last until 9 p.m., according to the event’s Facebook page. During the meeting, people will “address the danger posed” to the forest.

“We will be discussing how local businesses can support the movement, and how citizens can engage,” according to the event’s Facebook page. “We will also be assessing our collective resources as we move forward.”
