For some, the first of December marks the true beginning of the Christmas season, but that’s not the only reason today is notable.

On this day 61 years ago, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama, sending shockwaves through the nation.

As such, Dec. 1 is legally regarded as Rosa Parks Day in Ohio. Ohio University doesn’t appear to have any events planned related to Rosa Parks Day on its calendar.
