Police Blotter

Police Blotter: Suspected felon leads officers on woodland foot chase

A girls’ night out for one Nelsonville woman took a turn for the worst Saturday, when a confrontation with the local deputies landed her behind bars, rather than bar hopping.

On Saturday, deputies with the Athens County Sheriff’s Office were called to a Glouster residence in response to reports of an active dispute, during which “some intoxicated women” were refusing to leave, despite the caller’s requests to do so. Once on the scene, all parties involved were separated. One woman, however, was determined to rebel against officers.

After “repeatedly berating” the responding deputies and failing to follow simple commands to prove she could properly care for herself, the 44-year old woman was arrested for disorderly conduct and transported to the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail, according to police reports.

Parking Lot Purse-Snatcher

The next evening, deputies responded to the Dollar General in The Plains after receiving a report of a robbery that occurred in the store’s parking lot. Upon arriving at the scene, deputies contacted the victim, who said a man dressed in a camouflage jacket, jeans and a ball cap had approached her and asked if she would assist him in jump starting his car.

While the woman was attempting to call her boyfriend, however, the man snatched her purse, breaking the strap as he knocked the woman to the ground. He was then observed fleeing the scene with a female passenger, driving toward the nearby Valero Gas Station. The case is under investigation, according to the police report. Anyone with information related to the case is asked to contact the ACSO.

Woodland Foot Chase

On Thursday, a deputy with the ACSO was walking into the Go-Mart on West Union Street when he noticed a man whose appearance matched the description of a man who had been on the run from law enforcement in reference to multiple felony charges involving violent crimes. The deputy, who had dealt with the suspect in the past, attempted to make contact with the subject, who “attempted to conceal his identity,” according to the police report.

Officers with the Athens Police Department arrived on scene to assist, but when the suspect was told he would be detained, he fled on foot, ignoring officers “repeated commands” to stop running. The Sheriff’s deputy pursued the suspect onto State Route 56, then through various business parking lots and into the woods near the road before he was taken into custody and found to be in possession of a syringe. The suspect was arrested and transported to Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail, according to a police report.

Grumpy Grandma

On Sunday, deputies were called to a residence in Glouster in response to reports of an active dispute within a family. Upon arriving on the scene, they made contact with an individual who told deputies the grandmother “was upset and no longer wished for them to live with her.”

Deputies told the grandmother that although they were not legally permitted to remove a resident from the home, there were legal steps available to pursue a civil eviction notice to resolve the situation. No further action was taken in the case.
