Fit By The Fork: Detox the right way after a weekend of festing

While the hangover has faded away, a weekend of near-constant drinking can leave someone feeling sluggish for several days afterward. While it’s easy to blame the fatigue on a lack of substantial rest, there are two other culprits likely involved: poor hydration and unhealthy foods. It’s totally fine that you might have splurged on late night food (after all, weekends are for treating yourself), but continuing to eat and drink like garbage all week won’t give you the energy you need. Consider this your post-fest detox kit.

Caffeinate wisely

And that means no Red Bull, Monster, Rockstar or other sugar-bomb energy drinks. I’m talking about the natural stuff — coffee and tea. If you really can’t live without the flavored syrup in your latte, ask for half the regular amount. I swear it’ll taste almost exactly the same!

Keep a water bottle on you

I know it’s obvious, but it makes such a difference in how you feel. Sick of sipping it plain? Add frozen fruit instead of ice cubes.

Make a power smoothie

Save yourself the mess and prep of putting together a salad (yes, with fruits and vegetables) by throwing everything in the blender instead. Frozen berries, low-fat yogurt, dry instant oats, finely chopped spinach or kale, milk (or nondairy substitute), peeled cucumber, etc. You won’t even notice the veggies are in there. I promise.

Eat pasta salad

This makes a great meal for a few reasons. First, the Italian dressing isn’t loaded with bad fat like it's creamier cousins, Caesar and ranch. Second, you can add any lean protein (like chicken, pork or tofu) and lots of different vegetables (all of those pretty colors would make for a great Instagram, just saying). Last but not least, the whole grain noodles will keep you fuller way longer than the refined ones.

Choose grilled or baked — not fried

I know, I know… fried foods are the best. The problem is they don’t let you perform your best. Feeling bloated isn’t worth the agony (and the additional calories aren’t either), so pick foods that haven’t taken a swim in the deep fryer.
