Woman who robbed Athens banks, four others, faces up to 20 years in prison

A West Virginia woman is facing up to 20 years in prison after she pleaded guilty to three counts of unarmed robbery, including one in Athens.

Christine Joy Martin, 31, of Davisville, West Virginia, was initially charged in connection with six counts of unarmed robbery across three states, including at two banks in Athens. Martin robbed Peoples Bank, 1 N. Court St., on Dec. 27, and just two days later, she robbed Chase Bank, 920 E. State St. According to Court Filings, she stole $2,150 and $1,800 from each bank, respectively.

Aside from the two Athens robberies, Martin was also charged in connection with four additional unarmed robberies: First Commonwealth Bank and WesBanco, both in Washington, Pennsylvania, for $500 and $350, respectively; Huntington Bank in Fairmont, West Virginia, for $2,000; and United Bank in Morgantown, West Virginia, for $974.

As part of a plea deal that was filed April 19, Martin pleaded guilty to three of the charges but will not be prosecuted for the others. She faces a maximum of 20 years in prison and a possible fine of up to $250,000. She must also pay a mandatory restitution for all six robberies.
