County Commissioners: Injection well complaint resolved

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources and Athens County Prosecutor's office have resolved a complaint about possible misuse of an Alexander Township injection well.

Athens County Assistant Prosecutor Zachary Saunders met with the Athens County Commissioners at their meeting Tuesday to announce he had consulted with ODNR about a complaint of fluctuating brine levels at Ladd Ridge Injection Well, an inactive well.

Felicia Mettler, spokeswoman for Torch Can Do, an anti-fracking group, met with the county commissioners in February to complain about possible misuse of the injection well. The commissioners said they would take the complaint to the prosecutor's office for investigation, according to a previous Post report.

The complaint stated that there were fluctuations in the brine water volume, which shouldn't happen if the well isn't in operation, Saunders said.

After Saunders brought the complaint to ODNR's attention, the department posted a notification on its website in March stating the well is in compliance with ODNR's standards.

Saunders added that if a complaint is filed again, it should be directed toward the Chief of Mineral Resources at ODNR.

"Once he makes a decision ... if you don't agree, then you go through the court process which is administrative appeal to the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas," Saunders said.

In addition to meeting with Saunders, the commissioners met with the County Risk Sharing Authority to renew their contract and approved the purchase of 49 cameras to be used around the Athens County Courthouse.

The commissioners began looking into the possibility of upgrading the county's surveillance system in November after the courthouse steps had been vandalized about a month earlier.

The cameras cost $49,803.
