Baseball: Ohio swept by EMU despite stellar performance from Rott

Ohio suffered its fourth straight loss this weekend after being swept by Eastern Michigan in a three-game series despite a stellar outing from sophomore first baseman Rudy Rott.

Rott hit four home runs on the weekend and knocked in 12 RBIs.

The Bobcats suffered their second sweep to a Mid-American Conference opponent, as they were swept by Central Michigan last weekend. They were previously swept by non-conference opponent Butler in March.

Ohio is now 16-19 and 3-6 in the conference.

Game 3:

EMU sealed the sweep over Ohio with a walk-off single in the ninth inning off of Jake Roehn. The Bobcats dropped the contest, 12-11, in a game that lasted nearly four hours.

Ohio tallied 14 hits including a pair of hits from both Spencer Ibarra and Tanner Piechnick. It was Ibarra's seventh of the year. Rott hit his third and fourth home run of the weekend series, upping his total to six this year. The sophomore first baseman had six RBIs on the day.

Butch Baird started the game, but struggled to help Ohio’s cause. He allowed six earned runs on six hits.

Roehn took the loss, though, his second of the season.

Game 2:

Rott hit two home runs and went three-for-five with six RBIs, but the Bobcats were ultimately doomed as the Eagles pulled away with a four-run eighth inning. They lost the second game of the series, 12-9.

Ohio briefly led thanks to a leadoff home run from Ibarra and a RBI double by Ty Black in the top of the first, but EMU quickly tied the game in the bottom of the inning.

Michael Klein started the game for Ohio, allowing five earned runs and eight hits over five innings.

After EMU put four runs on reliever Cory Blessing in the bottom of the eighth, the Bobcats put three runners across the plate in the top of the ninth, but didn’t have enough to mount a comeback.

Bobcats reliever Tom Colletti was tabbed with the loss after only one-third of an inning pitched and allowing three runs on five hits.

Game 1:

Ohio started off the weekend series in dreadful fashion, dropping a 8-2 decision to EMU, while not recording a single RBI.

The Bobcats offense was shut down by Eagles starter Sam Delaplane, who pitched a complete game and allowed just one earned run while striking out 12 batters.

EMU took a 5-0 run into the fifth before the Bobcats scored their first run of the game, a wild pitch with the bases loaded that scored Connor Callery.

Black scored the second run of the game for Ohio, reaching home on a passed ball. Starting pitcher Gerry Salisbury took the loss, allowing seven of the eight earned runs.
