Police Blotter

Police Blotter: High-speed chase leaves deputies puzzled, disoriented man found on wrong front porch

As the weather grows warmer and the dog days of summer inch closer, deputies with the Athens County Sheriff’s Office have found themselves dealing with a number of inebriated people.

Last Wednesday, deputies responded to Center Street, north of Athens, after receiving a report of a man sitting on a homeowner’s porch without permission, acting “as though he was impaired,” according to the caller.

Deputies arrived on the scene and made contact with the man, who was “clearly disoriented” and wearing his shirt backward. The man said he had arrived at the residence to visit a friend but had been unable to locate her, and began repeatedly making “motions as though to fall asleep” while speaking with deputies.

The homeowners said the woman the man was looking for lived next door, and deputies escorted him to her residence. Contact was made with the woman, who agreed to take custody of the man for the evening and “keep him off of neighboring porches.” No further action was taken in the case.

Sunday Stumble

On Sunday, ACSO deputies were called to Jacksonville after receiving a report of a “disorderly person” stumbling around the street. Upon arrival, deputies spoke with the suspect, who was evidently heavily intoxicated and smelled of alcohol, according to the police report.

The Jacksonville man, who was found unable to stand on his own or provide coherent answers to deputies’ questions, was placed under arrest for disorderly conduct by intoxication and transported to Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail.

Fast and Felonious

On Sunday, deputies found themselves engaged in a car chase after attempting to stop a vehicle for a moving violation at a Chauncey intersection. After the driver disobeyed officers’ orders and “failed to come to a stop,” deputies pursued the vehicle onto Coal Run Road, shortly losing contact thereafter.

After patrolling the nearby area, deputies were able to locate the vehicle, which had crashed on the side of the road in what was deemed to be a traffic accident. Deputies were not, however, able to locate the driver or any of its passengers, and towed the vehicle as evidence, according to the police report.

On Saturday, the Athens County Criminal Interdiction Unit found itself involved in a vehicle chase of its own, pursuing a vehicle as it traveled at “very high speeds” down U.S. 50 near Guysville, east of Athens. Deputies, who were able to stop the vehicle on South Canaan Road, conducted a search of the vehicle, discovering a bag of suspect cocaine, as well as a pill “believed to be a controlled substance,” according to the police report. The suspect substances were sent for testing, and charges are pending results.
