One person missing after six kayakers swept over White's Mill waterfall

One person is missing after six kayakers were swept over the White's Mill waterfall Saturday afternoon, according to the Athens Fire Department.

AFD and the Athens Police Department were alerted at about 2 p.m. that multiple kayakers had fallen into the Hocking River near the waterfall.

“Emergency responders discovered that twelve (12) kayakers had been in the Hocking River above the water fall, six (6) were swept over the falls and six (6) were able to make it to the river bank before being swept over the fall,” the news release said.

Five of the six kayakers who went over the falls were either rescued by emergency responders or were able to escape from the water on their own. One kayaker, however, is still missing, and AFD has started a search operation.

According to the news release, additional information will be released as it becomes available.
