TV Recap: Week 5 of ‘Big Brother 19’ — Paul takes on 'Jody'

Correction appended.

Week five of Big Brother 19 was nothing less than entertaining. Jessica Graf used her Head of Household privilege to nominate Josh Martinez and Ramses Soto with hopes of getting her target, Josh, out of the house. But, Paul Abrahamian had a different agenda. Rallying up his loyal team of followers, one by one the Big Brother veteran flipped the vote in favor of Josh, leaving Cody Nickson and Jessica blindsided, again.

Sunday

Drama Arises After the Live Eviction

Immediately after the live eviction that took place on Thursday, July 27, Jessica revealed to the house that she received the final temptation which will keep her and Cody safe for a couple of weeks and that Paul would have to find a new pair to target. This comment did not sit well with Paul because she was assuming that he would have automatically targeted her and Cody.

Meanwhile, Elena Davies was upset because she was kept in the dark about keeping Josh safe and the plan to send Ramses home. Elena, Mark Jansen and Cody all felt like outsiders in the game.

Paul’s First Plan

Even though Jessica told the houseguests that she received the last temptation, Paul and the rest of the cast did not believe her 100 percent. Paul, not fully understanding what Jessica’s temptation is, planned to nominate her alongside Cody. If, for some reason, they came off of the block, he would replace them with Mark and Elena.

Paul’s Second Plan

Shortly after his conversation with Jessica, Paul met with Elena to discuss her future in the game. Paul, using his killer social game, led Elena to believe that her showmance partner Mark was ruining her game.

Obviously believing Abrahamian’s convincing words, Elena spoke with Mark moments later and told him that him hanging around Cody was a bad look for her in the house.

The Temptation Competition

Because Jessica was tempted inside The Den of Temptation on Wednesday, July 19, a consequence had to be unleashed on the house. The Temptation Competition will occur for three weeks right before nominations. The houseguests can choose whether or not they want to compete. The winner will be safe for the week and the loser will automatically be a third nominee on the block.

Jason Dent, Alex Ow, Matt Clines and Mark chose to compete. The players had to spin in place 15 times which allowed a wall to come down temporarily, they then had to grab a bowling ball and try to knock down the four pins that stood tall. If they did not hit all of the pins in the time given, the wall went back up and they had to spin again repeating that sequence until all the competition was completed.

Mark had the fastest time while Jason had the slowest which kept Mark safe for the week and Jason a nominee in danger of eviction.

Showmances Team Up

Elena feared for her safety in the house after the competition was over. If Mark was the backup target, Elena would be next in line due to Jansen receiving safety for the week. Shortly after Elena expressed her concern in her diary room session, Jessica pulled her aside to tell her that it is now the four of them (Jody and Marlena) vs the house (Paul).

Nomination Ceremony

Paul and his followers tried to weigh out the options of who could go on the block because Jody allegedly had safety. Ultimately, Paul decided to go with his gut and nominate Jessica and Cody for eviction. Jason was the third nominee because he came in last during The Temptation Comp.

Wednesday

Things heated up

Wednesday’s episode picked up right after the nomination ceremony. Jessica and Cody were angry because Paul technically “wasted” his HoH by nominating two people who had safety. Jody headed to the HoH room and Cody called Paul out for being the ringleader. Things took an unexpected turn when Paul told Jessica to lower her voice and that set Cody off. After that conversation, the pair went to another room to talk, and Jessica told Cody that he was wrong for getting in Paul’s face and he ruined both of their games.

In the kitchen, Paul told the strong side of the house what transpired between Jody and himself. Mark and Josh got into a face-to-face battle when Josh called Mark out for having allegiance to Cody, but not for former houseguest Dominique Cooper. Josh grabbed pots and pans and started clapping them in Mark’s face like Tanisha Thomas’ signature staple from The Bad Girls Club.

After The Storm

As things started to calm down, Paul was able to speak with Jessica privately. Paul told Jessica that he thought because she had the temptation, she would pull herself down and he could nominate two other people. Jessica revealed exactly what her temptation was which led Paul to put a plan in place.

Check Your Game

Moments after his conversation with Jessica, Paul rallied the troops up (Christmas Abbott, Raven Walton, Alex and Matt) and told them the plan was to make Jessica realize that Cody is bad for her game. If they could successfully pull that off, there would be a chance Jessica would not use the tempation and send Cody home.

They took Paul’s advice and got to work. One by one they all found different times to speak with her about her partner being a bad move for her game. Meanwhile, Cody and Mark were talking, and they both realized they’re in the same boat when it comes to ruining their girls’ games.

The PoV Competition

Jason, Jessica, Cody, Paul, Kevin Schlehuber and Raven were picked to play in the veto competition. The houseguests had to memorize important details from a number of different storms production played out for them. They had to fill in the blank before time ran up. Whoever had the most points, was the PoV winner.

  • Raven - 16
  • Cody - 15
  • Paul - 22 - PoV Winner
  • Jason - 15
  • Kevin - 16
  • Jessica - 12

Paul’s Second Attempt

Before the PoV ceremony, Paul wanted to speak with Jessica one last time before making a decision. Abrahamian revealed that on day 13, Cody told Matt they need to keep Jason and Alex in the house because those are the only two that would take a shot at Jessica and Raven (showmance partners). After that, he tried to sway her into making a deal that ensured she would not use the hex and send Cody packing. In order to make that happen, Jessica demanded two weeks of safety and she wanted Alex to be the next target sent home.

Thursday

Jessica On The Prowl

Thursday’s episode picked up with Jessica speaking to Matt about the conversation he had with Cody early on in the game. In attempt to save his own game, Matt did not say a word. Instead, he ensured her that it was irrelevant at this point and did not matter. After, Jessica found Cody and asked him about the conversation. He denied and Jessica quickly picked up on that. When she called him out, he got up and stormed away leaving Jessica contemplating whether she wants to accept the deal with Paul.

“Agree” To The Deal

Paul gathered his groupies in a room and informed them about the deal he made with Jessica. Their job was to make her believe they were going to honor it. Paul told Mark and Elena about the deal separately, only they believe the group was going to honor it.

PoV Ceremony

In a final attempt to get Paul to use the PoV to save them, each houseguest was given the option to say a few words. Jason told Paul that Cody doesn’t deserve to be in the house, he genuinely doesn’t like anyone, and that it puts Jessica in the middle. Jessica’s was “world peace” and Cody’s was “no speech."

Because he wanted to make sure Cody would go home, Paul used the PoV on Jason.

Jessica got sketched out

Raven, Jason and Kevin were all in a room talking about how likely it is that Jessica would use the tempation. Not realizing she was around the corner, Jason tried to subtly change the conversation. Raven got up to leave the room, and Jessica pulled her aside and let her know she was livid about what just happened. To her, it all looked sketchy and she said there is no more deal.

Raven told the majority of the house what just happened, and Paul took things into his own hands. Once he found out that the deal they made is off, he raised hell. He told Alex about Jessica wanting her out, and he told Josh to turn everything up to a 30.

Right on cue, Josh started up with the pots and pans again, Alex and Jessica argued about targeting her, and Raven and Jessica got into their own argument about Jessica allegedly throwing her name under the bus.

Live Vote and Eviction

Julie Chen appeared on the screen and greeted the houseguests. As the live vote and eviction began, Jessica told Chen she was ready to unleash her temptation on the house causing the eviction to come to a halt.

HoH Competition

During this Head of Household competition, the houseguest must put a ball down a path avoiding roadblocks into a slot at the other end. Ranging from numbers one-35, whoever scored the highest number would become the new HoH.

Matt took the lead with a score of six, Mark took over with a score of 15 while Jason tied with a 15 as well. Cody and Christmas both scored a 21, and Josh snatched the lead with a score of 23 making him the new HoH!

Final Thoughts

Josh has been the target for Jessica and Cody for quite some time. Now that the power has shifted, will they change their ways? Martinez will most likely take a shot at Jody but, The Temptation Competition is still in play and could change the course of the game. A new PoV winner will be crowned, and someone will be evicted come next Thursday.

Big Brother airs Sundays at 8 PM, Wednesdays at 8 PM, and Thursdays at 9 PM.
