TV Review: ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ season premiere off to a glamorous start

Celebrity Big Brother, the newest addition for the Big Brother franchise, adds a fresh flair of drama and gameplay never before seen in the house. It’s unclear how different it will really be from the original, but one thing is for sure — the houseguests are definitely interesting. Here’s what you might have missed during Big Brother last week.

The guest list is crazy

The house guest list includes Omarosa Manigault, Keshia Knight Pulliam, Brandi Glanville, Marissa Jaret Winokur, Ariadna Gutierrez, Shannon Elizabeth, Mark McGrath, Chuck Liddell, Metta World Peace, Ross Mathews and James Maslow.

Head of Household Competition

The first Head of Household competition was an endurance contest as usual, with contestants having to hold onto a trophy for as long as possible. The winner would be granted safety for the entire week and was able to pick two people for eviction. Shannon Elizabeth won the battle against the other 10 houseguests and has the power in the house. The win was essential for the women because now they could start knocking down the strong male players. At least that’s what they thought.

However, in classic Big Brother fashion, there had to be a twist to confuse and scare the players. Host Julie Chen revealed there were 11 goody bags inside the house, and one of the bags granted the person who found it had the power to change the Head of Household. Each player would have a chance to go into the diary room and find what’s inside their box. When the nomination ceremony started, the houseguest with the lucky bag would be able to change the nominees and become the Head of Household for the week.

Nomination Ceremony/Gameplan

Shannon’s plan is to bring make an all-female alliance (along with Ross). With this plan set in motion, it’ll allow the women to take out my men one by one. Shannon’s main target is James because he is a physical threat and an expert social player. The women are for it, but it doesn’t mean the guys won’t go without a fight.

Shockingly, Metta asked Shannon to send him home because he misses his family, especially his wife. Shannon puts this in the back of her mind for later, but she won’t take him out the first week because there are bigger fish to fry. When the nomination ceremony began, Keisha's goody bag was the lucky one, and she became Head of Household. Keisha stayed with the plan and put up James and Chuck on the block. Chuck and James weren’t surprised that they were put up on the block since both are strong competitors.

Veto and Elimination

The first veto competition was a classic for Big Brother fans. The contestants had to find letters and make the longest word they could imagine in order to possess the power of veto. Shannon went overboard with her 16-letter word, giving her the win. She stood her ground and kept the nominations the same.

Shannon’s alliance wanted otherwise, but it seems like she was playing her own game which put a target on her back.

When it came down to the elimination ceremony, there was a 7-1 vote to evict Chuck. Omarosa was the sole vote for James. Chuck is the first eliminated house guest for Celebrity Big Brother, which leaves one less strong male competitor for the girls to take out.

If the women keep up their winning streak next week, it looks like Shannon might find herself on the chopping block. If one the guys win HOH, it would be wise to blindside Shannon or try to get her on their side. If there’s one thing for sure it’s that Celebrity Big Brother is off to a great start, but more twists inside the house need to start emerging.

Celebrity Big Brother airs Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8 p.m. on CBS.
