Weekender Briefs: OU’s Dance Division to perform annual Winter Dance Concert; The Amazing Cat Show to showcase love for felines

Friday 

Kiss Me, Kate at 7:30 p.m. at Stuart’s Opera House, 52 Public Square, Nelsonville. ABC Players will present Broadway hit Kiss Me, Kate. The story is based on Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew and will be performed again March 3 and the next weekend. Tickets can be purchased in advance through Eventbrite. Admission is $8 for students and $12 for adults. 

Spirit and Soul concert series at 8 p.m. at Southeast Ohio History Center, 24 W. State St. Multi-instrumentalists John Sherman and Randy Clepper will perform Irish and Celtic tunes from their latest recording “Finally Tuned.” Admission is $10 for the general public and $8 for members.

The Amazing Cat Show art opening at 6 p.m. at ARTS/West, 132 W. State St. A “meowtain” of cat art will be displayed at ARTS/West Gallery beginning March 2. The exhibition is filled with art created by individuals from the New Beginnings House in McArthur and Home Away From Home in Logan. Live music, food and beverages will be provided. A few real cats will be up for adoption at the event. Admission is free. 

Love Alive with Subterranean at 10 p.m. at Casa Nueva, 6 W. State St. Columbus-based rock ʻn' roll band Love Alive will return to Casa Nueva and will be joined by Dayton-based band Subterranean. Admission is $5 for ages 18 to 20 and $3 for ages 21 and above. 

Saturday

Winter Dance Concert at 7:30 p.m. at Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium. The Dance Division in OU’s School of Dance, Film and Theater will present the annual Winter Dance Concert featuring performances from students and works by faculty and guest artists. Admission is free for OU students with IDs and $12 for general admission. 

Wine, Mead and Venison Competition at 5 p.m. at ARTS/West, 132 W. State St. For four hours, home brew competitors will compete to show off their best dark, light and unique brews. Admission is free, but attendees who would like to try the products are recommended to bring $12. 

In the Pines, Caution Step, Acrylic Grooves at 9 p.m. at the Smiling Skull Saloon, 108 W. Union St. Enjoy a night filled with music by local funk, rock and fusion band Caution Step and Cincinnati-based fusion and chill band In The Pines. Admission is $3. 

Sunday 

March Family Contra Dance at 3 p.m. at ARTS/West, 132 W. State St. Spend an afternoon filled with music and dancing with family members at ARTS/West. Children and adults will be taught dance moves until 5 p.m. Donations of $3 per dancer are encouraged.

22nd Annual Bridal Showcase at 1 p.m. at Ohio University Inn, 331 Richland Ave. Numerous premiere wedding and lifestyle vendors will showcase bridal attire at the OU Inn, and there will be prize giveaways of more than $1,000. Admission is free. 

Family Art Encounters at 2 p.m. at the Kennedy Museum of Art, 100 Ridges Circle. The Kennedy Museum of Art will host its drop-in program for families to engage in creative art activities. Admission is free and open to all ages accompanied by an adult. Prior registration is not required.
