City Council: Members appoint new person to Parks, Arts and Rec Advisory Board

Athens City Council appointed a new member to the Arts, Parks and Recreation Advisory Board at its Monday night meeting.

Daniel Brown was appointed by Mayor Steve Patterson because of his skill set and experience.

“I think he’s a wonderful selection,” Athens City Councilman Kent Butler, D-1st Ward, said.

Members also acknowledged two board members retiring. Paige Alost, executive director of the Athens County Visitor’s Bureau, and former Athens Mayor Ric Abel both retired. Abel served as chair of the board for six years.

“Their efforts were wildly beneficial,” Butler said.

Members discussed an ordinance that will allow the city to accept donations for the new municipal pool. A fund specifically for the pool would also be created.

Members also discussed an ordinance that would allow the city to hire an intern in the summer to look at revenue expenses from the last 20 years and help create a trend analysis.

The intern would be an “advanced undergrad student,” Patterson said.

The Ohio University College of Business has already brought forward a list of 10 students for the position.

Members passed an ordinance that authorizes Patterson to apply for a $100,000 grant through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to address stormwater pollution in the city. The city will also match 40 percent of the grant funds.

The grant money will likely be used on Stimson Avenue, Butler said.

Members also passed an ordinance that will close East Union Street between Court Street and University Terrace for the International Street Fair on April 7.
