City Council: Members to discuss Ohio Brew Week, ODOT grant

Athens City Council will discuss allowing the mayor to apply and receive a grant from the Ohio Department of Transportation at the Monday night city council meeting.

The Transportation Alternatives Program Grant will be used to improve several streets that cross Court Street, including East Union, Washington, East State and Mill streets.

The improvements would “improve pedestrian safety.” The grant also would allow for improvements for other modes of transportation by possibly adding bus stops and bike lanes.

Athens Mayor Steve Patterson said the grant will allow the city to repaint lamp posts instead of completely replacing them.

Members will also vote to approve a street closure, vending license and exemption of noise ordinances for Ohio Brew Week in July.

During the March 26 city council meeting, members heard a presentation from Brandon Thompson from the Ohio Brew Week Committee.

Thompson said the festival had about 4,000 visitors in 2017, and the committee is expecting the same amount in 2018. The festival will have 45 breweries attending.

Council will vote to close Court Street from Washington to Carpenter streets July 21 for Ohio Brew Week. The street will be closed from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m. that day for the festival.
