This article has been updated to reflect the most recent reporting.

Two inmates escaped from custody Monday afternoon in Athens. Both have since been apprehended.

The Athens County Sheriff's Office reported two men — Brian Chaney, 25, and Tyler Howard, 31 — escaped custody at 13 W. Washington St. on Monday around 3 p.m.

Ohio University Police Department sent out an alert around 5 p.m. reporting that Howard had been apprehended at an off-campus resident on Walker Street.

Police said both were barefoot and have several tattoos. Chaney was wearing an orange shirt and pants, and Howard was wearing a green shirt and pants.

The sheriff's office said both men should be considered dangerous, and civilians should not attempt to apprehend them. Police said they are not releasing information as to why the men were detained.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Athens County Sheriff's Office at 740-593-6633.
