The Bulldogs split a pair of games this weekend, falling to division-power Vinton County 78-52 on the road Friday night then beating Gallia at home 71-53 on Saturday.

Athens’ shooting struggles from Tuesday on the road at Warren seemingly carried over into Vinton County’s gym, as the Bulldogs shot a mere 29.7% from the field.

The Bulldogs did however see improved free throw shooting and solid play from freshman Joey Burrow.

The Bulldogs shot 83.3% from the line and Burrow led the team in scoring with 20 points, connecting on all six of his free throws and going 4-7 from three-point range. Fellow freshman Ryan Luehrman had a team-high 10 rebounds.

Saturday against Gallia was completely different for the Bulldogs. Maybe the home gym did it for Athens, which used a balanced scoring attack and good shooting on its way to victory.

Five Athens players scored in double figures as the Bulldogs shot 52.9% from the field.

Luehrman and senior guard Josh Skinner led the team in scoring with 14 points each. Senior Nick Stanley added 12 while DeVon Sharp and Burrow each scored 11.

The Bulldogs shot a combined 27-for-39 from the free-throw line against Vinton County and Gallia as opposed to 13-for-24 against Morgan and Warren.

Athens is now 2-0 at home and 0-2 on the road. The Bulldogs will play Wellston at home Tuesday before three straight road games.
