Grant aims to help low-income students

A new program designed to encourage under-represented and low-income students to pursue graduate degrees is recruiting.

The Robert E. McNair Post Baccalaureate Achievement Program is in its first year of operation at Ohio University. It was established through a five-year, $220,000 annual grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

This program is designed to support low-income undergraduate students who may not think of themselves as being part of that group that would go on to get a masters or doctorate

said Raymie McKerrow, grant director of the program and professor of communication studies.

The McNair Program will provide mentors for participants, as well as give them the opportunity to participate in five-week summer research sessions.

Interested students must be first-generation college students in their sophomore years with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5. They also must meet federal low-income guidelines.

A minimum of 22 students must be selected for the program, and the recruitment deadline is Feb. 6. For more information, contact assistant program director Valerie Mendoza. 17
