After failing to qualify even one athlete for the NCAA Regional meet during the first four weeks of the outdoor season, the Ohio track and field team finally got an athlete to Baton Rouge.
Competing at the Joe Banks Invitational at Ohio Northern, a meet not even on the team's original schedule, pole vaulter Boone Troyer vaulted 16-05.25 inches, winning the competition by two feet and qualifying for Regionals for the 2nd straight year.
The fact that it was a low-key meet kind of gave me confidence
Troyer said. Everybody else was done before I even came out. It definitely took a little bit of the pressure off. It was like I was showing other people what I could do because I was expected to be the top vaulter there.
Troyer was one of 10 Ohio athletes to record an individual first-place finish, though team scores were not kept during the meet.
There were mainly Division III schools there so obviously we expected to win the events we competed in but it's always good to have a win
coach Clay Calkins said.
Nearly all of the athletes who competed were touching up their events for the season's final three meets, Calkins said.
It was a weekend off with needed rest for a lot of the athletes
he said. The ones who did go
they all volunteered and wanted to travel and compete.
The Bobcats will not need to travel for competition for two more weeks, as they will play host to Cincinnati and Miami for the annual Southern Cup, Saturday, and the Ohio Open, May 8. Both meets will be at Goldsberry Track.
