Ohio University President Roderick McDavis put a stop to the demolition of the Mill Street Apartments after touring the complex last week. McDavis said in a press release that he sees in the 10 apartment buildings a potential we cannot afford to ignore.
After deciding the apartments were not worth the cost of renovation, the university previously planned to raze the structures and use the land for athletic fields.
Instead, OU will observe a 60-day waiting period, which began yesterday. During the period, private developers will be allowed to view the facility and determine the potential cost of restoring it. Those developers will be invited to submit proposals for renovation in accordance with university housing standards and municipal and state standards. Cost will be the key element of consideration.
Demolishing the buildings is still a possibility, should the university deem the projected cost of renovation too high.
Built in the 1960s and 1970s, the apartments most recently housed graduate students and their families. The last of the residents moved out after the first summer session.
