McDavis introduces minority scholarship possibility

When the Board of Trustees meet today, Ohio University President Roderick McDavis will announce plans to give 10 scholarships to minority students beginning next school year.

The Urban Scholars program, a central tenant in McDavis's plans to make OU's student body more diverse, will give $8,000 per year to minority students from big cities. After his announcement today, McDavis will attend a fund-raiser in Cleveland this Sunday to kick off the program and raise money to pay for it, he said yesterday.

McDavis and other administrators will go to a fund-raiser Saturday to celebrate the university's bicentennial, at which donors will pay up to $2,000 to attend. Another fund-raiser, which will be held on Sunday, includes a dinner, with alumni and other donors paying up to $500 a plate.

McDavis said he recognizes how ambitious his plan is, but he is confident that the university can raise the $80,000 in time. The deadline for students applying for Fall Quarter 2005 is Feb. 1.

Once we do that kick-off in Cleveland

we'll be in a position where we can go to Columbus and Cincinnati [to do more fund-raisers] he said. The program will focus on those three cities and possibly Dayton this year with plans to expand beyond Ohio to places like Atlanta and Chicago for future recruitment.

Tuition and fees are $7,770 per year, and the university estimates total costs including room and board at $15,309 per year.

OU also offers the Templeton Scholarship and King/Chavez/Park Scholarship, which target minority students. The Templeton award covers full in-state tuition, and room and board, and the KCP scholarships are for as much as $6,800.
