Four new programs were approved and course approval deadlines for the General Education program were discussed at the University Curriculum Council's first meeting yesterday.
M. Kathleen Rose-Grippa, chair of the Programs Committee, presented resolutions regarding the implementation of two new minors in Dance and two new degree programs. The minor degrees are in Somatic Studies and History and Theory. The major degree programs are a Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering and a Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering.
After review of the resolutions and corrections submitted by the floor, the council unanimously approved all four programs.
Margret Appel, chair of the council, also made announcements regarding the courses being approved for the new General Education program.
The first set of courses have been rolled over and approved
she said. Quantitative courses and freshman composition have been rolled over into the Foundational Skills section of the Gen. Ed. program.
Council members debated extending the Nov. 1 deadline for all courses submitted under the Foundational Skills section, although no decision was made.
Individual Course Committee Chair Marvin Fletcher presented a list of new courses to be submitted under the General Education program. Those courses, including Technology in Art Education, Money, Banking and Financial Markets, and Writing in the Sciences, as well as their corresponding time offerings, credit hours and prerequisites, were discussed. Corrections found by members on the floor were accepted and the list also was approved. 17
