About 50 people gathered last night at a candlelit vigil in remembrance of hate crimes in recent years. The event was organized by Henry Maccarthy, head of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, (LGBT) Commission of the Graduate Student Senate.
The vigil included accounts describing hate crimes against gender and sexuality. Hate crimes bring a message... (they) are motivated by hate and created by ignorance. Ignorance is pollution
Maccarthy said.
The significance of the day of the vigil is in commemoration of Matthew Shepard, a University of Wyoming student killed Oct. 12, 1998. Shepard was left to die in a Wyoming field and remained alive for five days before he died.
Maccarthy also discussed recent U.S. Senate legislation about hate crimes. Had the legislation been passed, new hate crime laws would exist to give protection to all minorities. 17
