Incumbent Athens sheriff wins 2nd term by significant margin

Vernon R. Castle won another term as Athens County Sheriff by a large margin in the general election last night with about 56 percent of the total vote.

Castle, a Democrat, received 14,357 votes. Independent candidate Patrick Kelly came in a distant second with 5,843 votes, about 23 percent of the total, while Republican candidate David Redecker received 5,639 votes, about 22 percent of the total.

If I had lost the election

I'd still be happy Castle said.

Castle said that during his previous term as sheriff he had been successful in implementing programs to find missing people and had brought respect and integrity to the office. During his next term, he said he would continue efforts to alleviate budget problems and implement a task force to deal with drug crimes.

It's time to get back to being Sheriff and quit being a politician Castle said. If we can make Athens County a better place

I want to do it.

Neither Patrick Kelley nor David Redecker could be reached for comment.
