Pre-New Year's bash proves popular, profitable each year

The All-Campus Radio Network (ACRN) will be ringing in the New Year a bit early. The student-run radio station is hosting its annual Pre-New Years Extravaganza at 10 tonight at The Union, 18 W. Union St.

Dance or Die's Mike DJ Barticus Bart will be the DJ for the event. Brandon DJ B-Funk Thompson will offer his skills in a supporting role.

The event serves as the last chance for students to get together for a dance party until next year, Bart said. It's usually held on the day before reading day so more people can get involved.

Brian Ostrander, promotions director at ACRN, said the night will culminate with a midnight countdown and over 250 bags of hand-cut confetti.

In addition to serving as a year-end party, the event also offers an alternative to the dance scene in the Court Street area.

Students are looking for other places to go given the limited selection of dance clubs uptown, Thompson said. This is a nice alternative.

The Pre-New Years Extravaganza will offer a unique music playlist. While most dance clubs are heavy on hip-hop and dance tracks, this event will offer a more diverse palate. We're going to be playing some old school music -stuff that's still good but doesn't really get any radio time

Thompson said.

Alternative and indie artists are sure to be featured as well, Ostrander said.

The unique combination of dancing, diverse music and a festive, New Years atmosphere has proven successful in years past. There's usually been about 200-300 people per year Ostrander said.

No matter how many people attend, the crowd is usually very energetic, Bart said, thinking back to his first experience with the event as a freshman. It's a great time.

Thompson, who has been the DJ at the party numerous times in the past, said ACRN listeners look forward to the Pre-New Years party every year. Even though the venue might change, the event is always packed and raises a ton of money.

ACRN hosts this annual event as a fund-raising effort for the station. Some of the profits from this year's party will go toward Lobsterfest the station's spring music festival that is held in front of the Front Four on South Green, Ostrander said.

ACRN will also be raffling off tickets to the Badly Drawn Boy concert at Newport Music Hall in Columbus on Nov. 29. Raffle tickets can be purchased at the front door.
