Ohio University President Roderick McDavis will visit various cities in Asia to strengthen existing international programs and sign a new partnership agreement with the University of Malaya.
McDavis' trip, which started yesterday and lasts until March 10, will include stops in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Beijing and Japan.
The general purpose of this trip is to promote our international programs in hopes to increase recruitment
said OU Media Specialist George Mauzy.
In Hong Kong McDavis will meet with Thomas Shostak, dean of OU's Lifelong Learning program.
It's the first time the president has been to our programs overseas and it's especially important because this is Lifelong Learning's 20th Anniversary Mauzy said.
In Hong Kong McDavis also will visit Hong Kong Baptist University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong to promote OU's foreign exchange students programs.
In Malaysia the president plans to sign a memorandum, or understanding, with the vice chancellor of the University of Malaya and attend the Malaysian Alumni Reception.
He also has meetings with OU Director of Southeast Asian Studies Drew McDaniel and College of Business Director of Executive Education and professor Edward Yost to discuss the business college's recruitment and exchange of students overseas.
In Beijing McDavis will meet with the U.S. Embassy Chinese Ministry of Education and visit Tsinglma University, the Beijing Sports University and the Beijing Institute of Graphic Communication.
Before returning home, McDavis will take a final trip to Japan to visit Chubu University, where he will meet with the instructors of Ohio Program of English Language Teaching (OPELT), an OU sponsored intensive English program offered at Chubu.
At Chubu McDavis also plans to have dinner with the university's officials, including President Iiyoshi and Chairman Ohnishi.
Accompanying McDavis in Japan are First Lady Deborah McDavis, Assistant to the President and Secretary to the Board Alan Geiger, and his wife, Sandra Geiger.
Final costs for the trip will be determined once McDavis returns.
