Sex education curricula varies in local schools

The sexual education curricula in Athens County's five school districts' vary depending on public, political and financial support.

Teena Stambaugh, teen pregnancy prevention coordinator for the Athens County Department of Job and Family Services, teaches sex education at some of the districts. Her curriculum, called Planet Teen

emphasizes abstinence but tells precautions for sexually active students.

Each district has different restrictions about what can be taught regarding contraception, sexually transmitted infections and abstinence, but Stambaugh would not say what information she provides at each districts.

She said she personally thinks that students who choose to be abstinent, still need all the facts.

If I teach you how to fly an airplane I teach you how to land and take off she said. (Abstinence only) is not giving the whole picture.
