The Undergraduate Art League's annual Winter Juried Show will show a selection of art produced by a variety of undergraduate students.
The opening for the mixed media show will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Siegfried Hall gallery Tuesday.
Submissions were accepted from any undergraduate student. All students, regardless of major, could submit a single piece for $3 and a series for $5. The submission cost helps to fund Undergraduate Art League activities.
This is what we look forward to all year. This is our biggest show
said Artie Toth, president of the league.
Of the more than 100 pieces submitted by undergraduate artists, only a few will make it into the show.
Each year, an artist is asked to come and jury the show, choosing which pieces should be shown in the limited gallery space available.
This year, the juror is Amy Schmierbach, an artist who teaches at Fort Hays State University in Kansas.
She has a history of jurying shows said Melissa Haviland, the faculty adviser for Undergraduate Art League.
Schmierbach said he chose pieces for the show based on the quality of the work and the professionalism of the presentation.
It was really difficult to pick out Schmierbach said, referring to process of selecting the pieces. Several pieces were extremely original, she said.
Ohio University's presidents have traditionally come to the show to buy art for their private collection and for the university. The art purchased for the university is displayed around campus.
This year, however, it has not been determined if President Roderick McDavis will attend the show.
Offers to purchase are welcome on all pieces in the show. Each artist decides personally whether to accept the offer. All money from sales goes to the artist.
The show is one of the largest events for the art league, and it is one way that the group helps to publicize undergraduate artwork.
This is definitely one of the main events
Haviland said.
Shows like this one are a large part of the activities the group plans and executes.
That's one of the main charges of UAL
interacting with the community as much as possible. Getting the art that undergraduates do out to the public
Toth said.
The Undergraduate Art League meets at 7 p.m. Mondays in Mitchell Auditorium. The group also shows movies at 7 p.m. Tuesdays in Mitchell Auditorium.
The league has T-shirts available for $20. The shirts feature a design created by internationally acclaimed artist and OU professor AEthelred Eldridge.
