I write in response to a letter from Ashley Henry, published Feb. 24 (Scheduling war causes frustration). Henry complains about, in essence, the entire preregistration process at OU. I know there are problems with advising and course offerings. In fact, I have five classes in the spring, all offered only one quarter a year. But I write to inform, not to complain.
As a freshman, Henry has plenty of general education and college requirements she can take if she can't get into her major classes. I doubt she has completed her Tier II requirements already. Or maybe she can't because she wouldn't dare take an 8 a.m. class or couldn't conceive of having a class on Friday or any other generic complaint.
As for her problem with a slow Internet connection, I wonder why she doesn't use one of the hundreds of courtesy computers on campus. However, I doubt it is a slow Internet connection. More likely, the Web site is slow because of the high traffic it receives during preregistration. If the Internet does not seem to meet your needs, I suggest TRIPS (telephone registration), which has a local as well as an 800 number.
Students in general need to stop complaining about how hard it is to get a RAC or slow connections and take concerns to their advisers. And if they have a problem with their adviser, they have the right to be assigned a new adviser whenever they want.
