'Cats defeated in ALC opener

After Saturday's game with No. 3 Northwestern, home is beginning to look a little less sweet for the Ohio lacrosse team.

In what was both teams' American Lacrosse Conference opener, the Wildcats, fueled by four-goal efforts by Lindsey Munday and Aly Josephs, ran over Ohio, 16-3, at Peggy Pruitt Field.

They were just moving the ball really well

coach Kate Brew said. We try to prepare for every game and we knew exactly what to expect from Northwestern. We ran into a lot of problems with a lot of unforced errors. We've been making too many fundamental mistakes. The loss was the second of the season to a ranked team for the Bobcats (0-3 overall, 0-1 ALC), who lost to No. 20 Notre Dame, 16-10, last weekend.

Northwestern (5-0, 1-0 ALC) got off to an early 5-0 lead, opening the scoring just 19 seconds after the first draw. Midfielder Caitlin Link scored to spark a little energy from the Ohio sidelines only to watch the Wildcats score five more before the end of the first half.

Five more goals found their way into the Ohio net before midfielder Dana Dobbie, who assisted on Link's earlier goal, scored to make it 15-2. Northwestern would score once more and was answered before the end of the game by freshman attacker Shannon Hadaway.

It's nice to see the younger girls going out and playing without fear Brew said. They've really stepped up. They're learning and getting better every game and I expect to keep seeing them improving throughout the season. Dobbie's goal was her seventh and team-leading ninth point of the season. Hadaway is second on the team with four goals and four points.

Ohio net minder Jayme Levy again found herself busy in net, making eight saves on 28 Northwestern shots; Levy now has 26 saves this season. The Bobcats mustered only 12 shots against the Wildcats.

We were looking for her to stop 50 percent of the shots Brew said. Jayme had a good game against Duquesne and then kind of slipped a little against Notre Dame

but we need our defense to step up more. Teams are getting too many opportunities. Brew says she will take her team back to basics this week in practice to prepare for the upcoming weekend.

Catching

receiving and getting shots off under pressure -these are all things we will need to do well this weekend

Brew said.

With two more games next weekend at home, the Bobcats will try to turn around their season. The Bobcats will be in action at Peggy Pruitt Field at 4 p.m. Friday against Virginia Tech and at noon Sunday when they play host to No. 6 Johns Hopkins.
