The women's golf team began their Spring season yesterday at the East/West Rio Verde College Invitational hosted by Western Michigan. The invitational took the women to the White Wing golf course in Rio Verde, Ariz. The tournament continues until Saturday.
Leading the women into this season are Sara Ann Palmer and Julie Tomlinson. Palmer came out of the ten-round fall season with an average of 77.1. Tomlinson posted a 77.6 average.
Joining Palmer and Tomlinson in Arizona are Shanna Siefke, Meredith Waterston, Kristen Mautz and Ana Brown.
There are several teams participating in the invitational, including Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Marshall, Toledo and host school Western Michigan from the Mid-American Conference.
After the first round in the tournament Ohio is in third behind Michigan and Minnesota but leading all other MAC teams participating in the tournament. Palmer leads the team shooting a 74 for the first round. Individually she is tied for eighth out of 108 competitors. Tomlinson is tied for 13th place with a 76. Mautz shot a 79 and is tied for 31st while Siefke's 80 strokes tied her for 40th place. Waterston is tied for 54th with an 82 and Brown is tied for 63rd with an 83.
On the men's side Beginning their Spring season today, the men's team is competing in the St. Croix Collegiate Classic in the Virgin Islands. The tournament will take place at the Carambola Golf Club.
There are 16 schools besides Ohio that will be competing in the event including Akron, Eastern Michigan, Marshall and Miami from the MAC. The event begins today and continues through Sunday.
Brian Elsea leads the men into their spring campaign after averaging a 73.25 during the fall. Jon Johasky, Mark Cimarolli, Ryan Siekmann, Blake Russell and Grant Christman will all join Elsea this weekend.
