While many students suffered through a cold and dreary spring break, the Ohio men's golf team was busy enjoying the warm weather of North Carolina.
The team spent the week playing six different courses in North Carolina, most notably Pinehurst National and Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club.
We go down to North Carolina to work on our golf game and find out where we are with each person's golf game by playing difficult golf courses
coach Bob Cooley said.
Ohio, familiar with playing stroke play tournaments, played two matches in the form of match play over the course of their week in North Carolina.
The team enjoyed the change of pace.
It was fun. We played match play so it was a lot different than what we're used to playing. We'd never played (match play) before senior Brian Bickle said.
The Bobcats got their trip off to a good start when they beat Seton Hall 4-2 in an exhibition played at the Southern Pines Country Club last Sunday.
Junior John Johasky and sophomore Ryan Siekmann lead the way for the Bobcats.
On Thursday, the Bobcats faced off against High Point University at the Colonial Country Club, outside High Point, North Carolina. The team fell to the Panthers 3.5-2.5 in the match play event.
Once again, Johasky paced the Bobcats, this time joined by sophomores Grant Christman and Mark Cimarolli.
Ohio will be back in action April 8-9 when they travel to Huntington, W. Va., for the Marshall Invitational.
How the Women Fared The women's golf team spent their spring break soaking up the sun in Citrus Springs, Fla., where they competed in the Lady Herd/El Diablo Intercollegiate. The tournament was hosted by Marshall, and played at El Diablo Golf and Country Club.
The Bobcats were tied for fourth after the first round of the tournament, thanks in part to Julie Tomlinson's 73. However, as the week wore on, the team wore down.
Ohio finished in a tie with Cincinnati for seventh out of the 17 teams that competed. Both squads fired 958, 50 strokes off the pace set by the winning team, Coastal Carolina.
The Bobcats were lead by Sara Ann Palmer, who shot a 77-73-83 for a total of 233. She finished in a tie for ninth out of the 100 competitors.
