Music trends noted

Music from many genres has contributed to the past 35 years of music at Ohio University. Folk music was popular in the 1970s, pop and punk in the '80s, and hip hop in the late '90s.

The music scene of tomorrow is often dictated by the musical tastes of today. A recent Post survey of 205 OU students might reflect current musical tastes.

In addition to responding to the categories in the graphic accompanying this story, students were allowed to voice their opinions in a section of the survey asking, What are your views on music in Athens

Ohio and at Ohio University? Many students said they would like to see a better variety of radio stations in Athens.

Several students said they are not aware of the various concerts the university organizations put on and requested better advertising of events.

Bring in better performers was a complaint of some students in regards to university organizations, but others were more understanding.

One student said, For the location and the size of Athens OU does a pretty good job of bringing in performers. Athens' local music scene was praised for being a great place for underground bands to get their start. Some thought Athens' local music scene was diverse; others thought it was oriented more toward folk/singer-songwriter/bluegrass music.

The survey was distributed throughout various buildings on campus. Most of the polling was done in the Learning Commons of Alden Library and Gordy Hall.

Averages have a margin of error, as percentages were rounded up to whole numbers if the fraction was above .5.
