The Ohio softball team is in Rock Hill, S.C., this weekend for the Winthrop/Ringor Invitational Tournament.
The team has struggled so far this season, posting just a 2-9 record. However, their outlook for the tournament this weekend is positive.
We have very high expectations
coach Roanna Brazier said. I expect to be right in there on Sunday. Our pitchers have gotten better our hitters have gotten better and our defense is really good. The team is looking to build on the momentum it gained last weekend at the Purple & Gold Challenge at LSU, where it closed the weekend with a victory over Columbia.
We finished on a positive note down at LSU
and regardless of how it looked in wins and losses
we did have some bright spots
and we played well that last game
Brazier said.
This weekend the Bobcats will play a total of four games in pool play, two on Friday and two on Saturday. If they finish in the top four out of five teams in their pool, they will then move on to play Sunday. However, the Bobcats have some tough competition in their pool.
They open the tournament today at noon against South Carolina State and play Western Illinois tonight at 8:00 p.m. Saturday's games are against St. John's and tournament host Winthrop.
Western Illinois is going to be tough
Brazier said. They're a traditionally strong softball school. Winthrop is winning some big games; they've beaten Purdue and a few other schools. We're looking to have a big game against College of Charleston
who we have already lost to. Despite the quality of their opponents, the Ohio softball team is looking to put together a team effort for the tournament this weekend.
We've been struggling
but I expect everyone to step up as a team
Brazier said. I really have a lot of expectations for most everybody on the team.
