2 MAC teams have strong season starts

The Ball State baseball team jumped out to a 6-0 record within the Mid-American Conference for the first time in school history after sweeping Northern Illinois last weekend.

In the final game, the Cardinals turned a 5-3 deficit after seven innings into a 15-6 rout. The late-game offensive explosion was led by a lineup that features five regular starters hitting over .300: Marc Franz, .371; C.J. Webb, .333; Mike Sullivan, .324; Brad Miller, .323; and Jason Bucholtz, .317.

Joe Ness leads Cardinals pitchers in wins with four, while Erik Morrison has seven saves to go along with a 3-0 record and a 1.40 ERA. After traveling to Notre Dame today, Ball State will return home to host Akron for the weekend, looking to add wins to their MAC record.

In softball, Central Michigan is standing tall with its 5-0 MAC record and boasts the MAC West Player of the Week in freshman Amy Hudson.

Hudson leads the team in hitting with a .383 batting average. At the plate this week she hit .412, scored three doubles and a home run and drove in three runs.

With pitchers Jessica Garvin and Jill DeRoche holding their opponents to a batting average of .167 over the last week, the Chippewas were also dominant on the mound.

Joining Hudson as MAC Softball Player of the Week was Marshall's Gina Guzzo, while Miami's Jackie Poggendorf and Bowling Green's Liz Vrabel both snagged the MAC Pitcher of the Week award in their respective divisions.

Guzzo, the MAC East Player of the Week, batted .400 this week and hit her fifth home run of the season against Eastern Kentucky last Wednesday.

The winner of all four games in two doubleheaders against Toledo and Ohio, Poggendorf's final victory of the week was a 12-strikeout no-hitter against the Bobcats on Sunday.

Vrabel matched her career high in strikeouts in the Falcons' last win, with 14 against Northern Illinois. She also went 3-1 for the week, with the only loss coming against top-ranked Michigan.
