The Ohio baseball team won its eighth game of its recently completed 10-game home stand last night as it came from behind to beat Dayton 6-5.
Ohio coach Joe Carbone said the team never gave up even after falling behind.
Some teams quit
but we don't he said. We kept our poise kept our heads in the game and a couple guys really came through for us.
Designated hitter Anthony Gressick, who went 3-for-4 last night, said that it feels good to have started hitting more consistently in the past few games.
I started off pretty slow this year and obviously I don't want to do that
Gressick said. I wanted to get a little better and drive the guys in that are on base and get on base for guys to drive me in.
The Bobcats got on the board early, scoring twice in the second inning on a double to right field by first baseman Jon Vondrell and an RBI ground out from shortstop Bryant Witt. Ohio added another run in the third when Dusty Hammond scored on a single to left off the bat of Gressick.
Dayton then cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the fifth and went ahead in the next inning scoring three more runs to extend its lead to 5-3.
The Bobcats got a run back when Gressick led off the sixth with a single and crossed the plate on a double down the left field line from Vondrell.
Bryan Buck and Hammond led off the seventh inning with back-to back singles. Buck then tied the game as he crossed the plate on a ground out to first off the bat of third baseman Brian Colopy and Hammond scored the game winner on a RBI single from catcher Ben Crabtree.
Following appearances by pitchers Luke Howard, Andrew Shisila, David Moyer and Daniel Utts, Yale Silverman tossed the final two innings, allowing no runs on two hits.
They seem to be swinging the bats pretty well
Silverman said. I just try to throw them off-speed like I do all the time and try to keep them on their front foot and see if I can get them out.
Utts (1-0), who pitched two innings in relief, received the win for Ohio last night.
Ohio (16-14 overall, 6-4 Mid-American Conference) begins a four-game road trip as it heads to Duquesne today, with the first pitch set for 3 p.m. Zeke Isaacs will get the nod for the Bobcats.
