Cornhole brings OU fraternities together

Members from 14 of Ohio University's fraternities competed in a cornhole tournament Saturday in order to promote unity and to attract students considering rushing this spring.

Informal Spring Rush started yesterday and continues through Thursday, said Michael Giardini, Interfraternity Council vice president of public relations. He said around 100 to 200 people are expected to rush.

Giardini said the event was open to everyone, and it showed OU students that the Greek community is united in its causes because so many fraternities participated.

College Street through State Street was the dividing line that separated the fraternities into east versus west in the tournament. Each fraternity had two teams that competed.

Tom Healy, IFC president, said IFC decided to have the tournament to show how well the different fraternities get along.

When everyone is getting along

morale is high and more people want to be a part of that Healy said.

Kyle Henchar, vice president of Delta Tau Delta, said this was the biggest event he has seen all year. He said the event was good for those considering rushing because it was not too formal, and they could talk with anyone in the different fraternities.

Chasen Hasan, IFC vice president of athletics, said he was happy so many people came to the non-alcoholic event.

There is a stereotype that all we do is drink. That is not true. Nobody is drinking right now

and we are having a lot of fun

Hasan said.

Hasan also said even though the event divided the fraternities into east versus west, it showed that each fraternity was different, but they could come together in a positive way.

Giardini said he considered the tournament turnout a success because this was the first time there had ever been an event like this with members from all the fraternities attending. He said he hopes to have more events like this in the future.
