The Athens County Commissioners approved spending $46,700 for the Sunday Creek Valley Water District to complete the fifth phase of a water line improvements to line segment A, at their meeting Tuesday.
Phase five consists of replacing a 6-inch concrete pipe with an 8-inch concrete pipe, said Randy Stoll, project engineer.
The first four phases, which included replacing the water district's three main water tanks, have been completed.
Even with the funding from the commissioners, Sunday Creek Valley Water District in Millfield only will complete about half of its proposed original project. The water district asked the commissioners to approve the reduction in the length of the waterline from 3,800 linear feet to 1,800 linear feet.
The project, which began seven years ago in an attempt to increase water pressure to residents between Hooper Ridge and Millfield -about 7 miles north of Athens city -now is projected to be complete by the end of the year, weather permitting, said Bill Theisen, an Athens County commissioner.
Last year, the water district funded the project with a Community Development Block Grant. The water district received the Community Development Block Grant Formula Program, said Jessica Stroh, community development coordinator for the Hocking, Athens, Perry Community Action program.
This is just a continuation of their efforts to provide the community with better drinking water
Stroh said.
The commissioners now are accepting applications from area organizations interested in receiving this year's community development block grant. About five projects are awarded funding from the grant each year.
Past projects include replacing waterlines and purchasing playground equipment. Project proposals will be presented Tuesday, and recipients will be notified in May. Recipients then have one year to complete the project. 17
