Federal Hocking renews 29 teacher contracts, salaries

Twenty-nine teachers in Federal Hocking Local School District had their contract continuations approved at last night's school board meeting, following last week's announcements of staff cuts at both Nelsonville-York City School District and Trimble Local School District.

Six of the teachers received one-year contract continuations. Nine teachers had their contracts renewed for two years. Five of the teachers received three-year continuations and nine of the contract renewals were for five years.

The highest of the salaries was $50,000 and the lowest was $26,000.

Board President Tom McGuire reminded those in attendance that the continuations were still tentative and subject to changes.

The teachers in Federal Hocking also received board approval of one of the three calendars their union generated for the next school year.

Board member Susan Green said she was concerned about students receiving too many days off in the winter, instead of toward the end of the school year.

I'm just speaking really from a parent's perspective. I'm concerned

she said. We take two weeks off at Christmas and one week off for Thanksgiving and all those days in January because of flooding and I have a kid that is a pretty good student and he struggled.

She would rather have students go to school more during the winter months because it would be easier for students to pay attention when the weather is not sunny,, Green said.

District Superintendent Jim Patsey explained to Green that the teacher's union contract made them responsible for the development of three calendars the board then had the ability to approve or reject.

The administrators I guess really don't have a say in the matter Patsey said. He agreed with Green that more days off in the summer would be preferable but he said there was nothing he could do about it.

The teachers in the district have also put together a literacy workshop as part of an education conference from April 21-23, high school principal George Woods said. The conference will be held at the high school and will be attended by teachers from Chicago, Youngstown and Cincinnati, among others.
