Golf teams finish in middle of pack

The Ohio men's golf team had some ups and downs this weekend, finishing the FirstEnergy Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of Akron, in eighth place out of the 15-team field.

The Bobcats got off to a slow start, firing a 317 in the first round, but bounced back in round two, shooting a 290. Coach Bob Cooley said keeping the ball out of the water at the Firestone Country Club proved to be the difference between the two rounds. Ohio finished the tournament with a 303 on Sunday, giving them a match total of 910.

We didn't play very well

Cooley said. We just got off to a real bad start in the first round and it just kind of continued.

The Bobcats were lead by Blake Russel and Ryan Siekmann. The pair tied for 33rd with scores of 228, Grant Christman finished three strokes back in a tie for 43rd.

The University of Toledo won the tournament with a four-over-par 868, beating second-place Ball State University by five strokes.

The individual title went to Toledo's Justin Bertsch, who fired a six-under-par 210, beating out teammate Tyler Riley and Ball State's Wayne Denger, four-hole playoff.

Next up for the Bobcats is the Ohio State University Kepler Intercollegiate in Columbus.

Women at Lady Buckeye Invitational This weekend at the Lady Buckeye Invitational in Columbus, the Ohio women's golf team finished in a tie for 10th place out of 15 teams.

Ohio was paced by Ana Brown, who tied for 37th place, carding an 83-74-81 for a total of 238 on the tournament. Shanna Siefke finished two strokes behind Brown in a tie for 42nd place and Kristen Mautz led the team on Sunday, shooting a 79 on the final day of play, giving her a 54-hole total of 244.

Michigan State won the tournament, with a team total of 886, outshooting host Ohio State by nine strokes. The individual crown went to Ohio State's Lindsay Knowlton, who fired a 214.

The Bobcats will remain close to home next weekend, traveling to Indian Springs, Ohio, for the women's Mid-American Conference Championships, at Walden Ponds Golf Course.
