Kate Brew is in the middle of her third season as head coach for the Ohio lacrosse team. The Post's Nick Miller sat down with her to talk about where the program is going, becoming a mother, her players' love of John Denver and her obsession with Jon Stewart of The Daily Show.
The Post: What got you interested in lacrosse and when?
Kate Brew: I started playing in sixth grade because it was the first time our county had a rec-league and it was just something new that I wanted to give a try. I had been playing softball and soccer.
Post: What kept you playing it and interested in lacrosse?
Brew: I think the excitement and the speed of the game did. It is really just a fun game to play -it's one of those games that once you play you have a hard time saying no to.
Post: What's your favorite aspect of the game?
Brew: I think it's the people you meet and relationships I've formed through the sport. My best friends are my college teammates.
Post: What are your favorite sports to watch and play outside of lacrosse?
Brew: I'm a big NASCAR fan, I watch college basketball and football. I love tennis; if I wasn't playing lacrosse, tennis would be my next sport -although I'm not very good at it. I grew up owning and riding horses and I love to ski too.
Post: Now in your third season with the program, where do you see it going?
Brew: The improvement I have seen in the three years I've been here has been amazing. In the next couple of years we will be a legitimate top 20 team. We continue to get better every year although our record really isn't showing it right now. We will improve on it and will be recognized as a legitimate team.
Post: Outside of athletics, what are your other hobbies?
Brew: Well my newest hobby is I just had a child 17 weeks ago, so I am a new mom and I have been spending as much time with her as I can. In addition to that, I am an animal person; I've got a dog. I like to go hiking and traveling. Now that it is warm out, I'd like to take the baby and the dog hiking.
Post: What are your favorite movies, television shows and music?
Brew: One of my all-time movies is Trains
Planes and Automobiles. I like the good old comedies and I like Alfred Hitchcock movies. With TV, I love Seinfeld and The Daily Show -I watch that every night before I go to bed, I can't go to bed without seeing Jon Stewart. I don't really watch any of that reality TV or stuff like that. In music, I love U2 and all kinds of music -country, rap. As long as it's good music I love it.
Post: Is there anything you or the team listens to before games?
Brew: When I walk into the locker room, the team is dancing to John Denver, God help them. I'd like to think they have better tastes than that, but that's what I walk into every game day. 17
